Tips to Find Cheap Plane Tickets

For most people, airfare is usually their single largest vacation expense.  If you can figure out how to save there, you can dramatically decrease the price of your entire trip.  I was surfing around on digg and came across 15 Tips for Cheap Travel: #2b) How to Find Cheap Plane Tickets on Money For the Rest of Us. The real value of this post is it has links to some good, lesser-known aggregators. Everybody knows about the big national sites like Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia, etc but the smaller aggregators are often where the real bargains are at. I myself am partial to Airfare Watchdog.

Buy From the Source

Another simple tactic you might want to try is buying directly from the airline’s website.  Most airlines will reserve their absolute lowest fares for sale exclusively on their own website.  If you find a decent price on one of the national sites, it can’t hurt to go directly to the source and see if they offer the same route cheaper.  Often, they do.  ITA software has a good Fare Shopping Engine you can use to scour the net for worldwide deals.  You can’t book a flight on the site, but it will hook you up with the airline so you can buy directly from them.

Finally, if you live in the Southeast you should check out Clark Howard’s Atlanta Travel Deals. I have had good luck there in the past.  I once even snagged a $400 round-trip ticket to Santiago de Chile thanks to Clark.
