If a company goes bankrupt, your gift cards are effectively worthless since they are treated as a small loan to the company and not as cash. I was under the impression employees and then customers always got first dibs in bankruptcy, but apparently you aren’t technically a customer if you buy a gift card. Weird. Good to know.
