5 Tips For A Frugal Thanksgiving Feast
2008 November 27
Thanksgiving is usually the one meal a year where no expense is spared for many families. But with money tight this year for man, it pays to be a bit more frugal with your hard-earned Thanksgiving dinner money.
- Serve More Inexpensive Side Dishes First - Inexpensive fruits and vegetables such as pears, potatoes, and peaches are delicious, nutritious, and more importantly, full of fiber. You’ll fill up quicker and eat less of the expensive stuff, increasing leftovers and stretching your Thanksgiving dollar across more meals.
- Buy The Whole Turkey Rather Than Just The Turkey Breast – According to Amy Brantley, the price of turkey falls enough around Thanksgiving it’s actually cheaper to buy the whole bird and throw away what you don’t use rather than just purchasing the turkey breast. Go figure.
- Buy Just Enough To Do The Job – Buying too much turkey only to throw it out later isn’t very frugal. Instead, use the turkey calculator (yes, there’s a turkey calculator) to calculate exactly how much you should buy.
- Become A Vegetarian – Since I don’t eat much meat, I’m perfectly content stuffing myself with mac n’ cheese, mashed potatoes, corn bread, and apple sauce – all very inexpensive items. Sure it’s not the healthiest meal but hey, it’s just once a year.
- Enjoy Yourself! - Thanksgiving is about spending time with family, not spending a fortune making sure everything is perfect. Relax and enjoy yourself.
