New Spanish Blog Launch

2008 December 6

As some of you probably know, I also run a Spanish learning website, http://learnspanishonyourown.com.  It’s been in existence for over 3 years now and though I’ve neglected it the last few years (and it’s extraordinarily ugly), it’s managed to attract some links organically and achieve a Google PageRank of 3, all the while earning on average between $100-200 per month.  It’s also a topic I’ve experienced a renewed interest in.  I haven’t traveled through the Spanish-speaking world in a while, but I still love the language.  Thus, I’ve decided to launch a Spanish Language Blog on that domain at http://learnspanishonyourown.com/blog

While the Spanish niche isn’t the most profitable on the internet (anecdotally I’d place it at about half as profitable as the finance niche), it’s definitely something I have a passion for an can see myself sustaining for the long term, which I think is far more important for a blog’s long-term growth than profitability alone.  Additionally, the domain has the advantage of being over 3 years old, several hundred links, and decent ranking ability for a variety of long-tail keywords.  Perhaps most importantly, it’s almost a completely empty niche as far as blogs go.  I couldn’t find a single major blog on the subject.  Since I’m already making money from that domain and already have moderate search engine authority, I figure I could grow the blog much quicker than in another niche that’s either a.) more crowded (like personal finance) or b.) a topic I don’t know much about.

If you are interest in learning Spanish or just the language/culture in general, check out the original site, which is more focused on the nuts and bolts of learning the language (complete with product reviews) and the new blog, which will probably focus a bit more on culture and travel but will still cover more than its fair share of Spanish learning tips.  Two of my first posts on that blog include an overview of the preterite vs imperfect past tenses and typing Spanish Alt codes on a laptop.  And if you’re interested in learning Spanish, please consider subscribing to the feed as well.  Wish me luck!
