I stay in Manhattan every time I go to NYC. I recommend the Chelsea Hotel, http://www.hotelchelsea.com . This hotel has kitchenettes in many of the rooms which is a major plus for me and is convenient to everything.

Also think about where you want to stay. If you know the areas you can sometimes get really good hotel prices off Priceline’s Name Your Own Price feature (5 star midtown hotel for $99/night once, no kidding! Right after New Year’s too!). You can also sublet, where you stay in someone’s apartment while they’re out of town. You benefit from more comfortable surroundings, a kitchen, etc as well as cheaper prices; and they make some money! Sublets can be found on Craigslist.

I live and have lived in NY all my life and I think these tips are great. My friends and I have always said that fun in Manhattan doesn’t always have to involve going broke the next day. The two best things are : you can walk anywhere, as mentioned. I survived 2 months without a metrocard and didn’t feel like I was under house-arrest because I trekked everywhere. Plus, there are so many great parks and open areas or exciting neighborhoods to hang out for quality time. People might be drawn to the hottest bars in the meat packing district but I always think those places are the least unique when trying to get a feel of NY.
