I Got A New Job!

After about two-and-a-half months on the market, I finally found another job.  And what’s more, I didn’t really even have to settle.  It’s near-ideal for this stage of my career and fills a few important holes in my resume.  The commute is a bit further than I’m used to, but it’s still under 30 minutes one-way so I can’t complain too much about that.  At first I was a bit hesitant to accept the first offer I got, but as I thought more about it I decided it was silly to say no just because it was the first.

Pros Of The New Job

  • Higher pay than my previous job
  • More responsibility:  this one is closer to a senior than junior position
  • Work directly with senior developers, which should increase my skills dramatically in a short period of time
  • Small, laid-back company atmosphere
  • I can wear flip flops
  • Room for advancement
  • Fills a few very important holes in my resume

Cons Of The New Job

  • An extra 15 minutes in the car each way
  • Far from my friends, so it will make meeting them for lunch/dinner/whatever more difficult
  • Earlier hours:  I can’t go in at 10 am anymore
  • More structure than what I’m used to, but that’s not necessarily a con per say

Overall, the pros far outweigh the cons, especially when you take the sizable raise into consideration.

The best part is, I don’t start for another 2-and-a-half weeks, so I’m going to have a fun vacation until then!  Any suggestions on where I should go?  I’m thinking

  • Caribbean cruise
  • Puerto Rico
  • U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Costa Rica
  • Florida Keys
  • Charleston
  • New Orleans
  • Vegas!

Someplace warm is required, so places like New York are out.  Suggestions welcome!

Flip-flops? How cool is that? Congratulations!

New Orleans is my favorite place however I don’t think it’s very warm this time of year. My sister’s taking me to Hawaii for our birthday’s. I’ve seen a lot of deals for Vegas and Hawaii.
It’s going down to 3 degrees tonight. I can’t WAIT to get on the plane!

Congrats! It’s minus nineteen here at the moment, so the flip flops thing is a bit upsetting :(

Congrats! How about Toronto? No? You’re right – way too cold!

Excellent. I’m glad to hear someone got a job. Now if the economy produces another 499,999 jobs this months we won’t see an increase in the unemployment.

What industry are you going to be working in?

Curt, software developer. The company’s niche is public and private libraries. They’ve more than doubled in size over the last year so it looks like their niche has protected them so far.

Four Pillars, maybe if it were June I would consider Toronto. I may actually swing up by Boston for a long weekend though on some Delta miles I have saved up.

I would have to suggest something all inclusive mainly because it feels great to be treated like royalty for a week (depending where you go). Maybe somewhere like Jamaica or Dominican Republic? I have been to both and you can find a great deal to a resort with perfect accomadations. The best part about all inclusive is its all you can drink and all you can eat!

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy yourself because you deserve it. When your on vacation think of me taking the bus to school in Toronto where it’s about -20 C right now.
