IRA Rates – Getting the Best Rates in Town

In reality, the IRA rates that you will receive wholly depend on your investment choices.  An IRA is merely a type of account that contains investments.  It is the investments themselves you will earn (or lose) a return on.

Right Investment Choices

Since risk and return are intimately related, if you go for the safest investments, you’ll generate super high returns. The only secured investment types are  FDIC-insured high-interest CDs or short-term treasury securities.

However, if you place your funds into CDs, the IRA rates you can expect to receive probably won’t top 5% annually (and that’s a generous assumption). This is regardless of how much money you have invested and the term of your investment. To get the highest yield of CDs, go for five-year jumbos, which come with a minimum deposit amount of $100,000.   Please note, though, that longer-term CDs are more exposed to the risks of inflation.

In Search Of Higher Returns

There are many ways to improve the rate of return of your IRA, but higher returns come with higher risk. You should take great care to educate yourself about the risk/return characteristics of the riskier asset classes. For example, you can invest in real estate (via REITs), which can bring a significantly higher return on investment. Alternatively, you could invest in the equities of public corporations based both in the U.S. and abroad.

Risk And Return In Retirement

Though your primary concern once you reach retirement is to maintain your wealth rather than dramatically increase it, most retirees can’t afford to play it too safe.  A no-risk cash-only portfolio would certainly protect your wealth from nominal loss, but the slow, steady effect of inflation would eventually permanently impair your standard of living.  That’s why it’s so important to make wise asset allocation decisions in retirement:  you don’t want to take too much risk, but you probably can’t afford to take too little, either.  With the right investment choices you can get the best interest rates for IRA available to make your retirement years more comfortable.
