Getting Fit On A Budget
By far, the least expensive way to exercise is to do so at home (see: Outfit A Complete Home Gym), but many people feel like they need the structure of a gym or exercise class to keep themselves motivated. If you’re one of these people, there are ways to get your exercise without busting your budget. Here are some tips to keep both your body and wallet healthy:
Take Advantage of Gym Promotions
If going to the gym is your thing, keep an eye out for local gym promotions. Many gyms will let you visit for a temporary time for free or for a few dollars so you can try it out. You could visit a number of different gyms during their promotional periods and save over paying expensive monthly memberships to one.
Purchase Classes in Bulk
Many gyms offer yoga or aerobics classes in bulk. Instead of paying per class when you go, consider buying in bulk or in “packages” for the discounted rate.
Participate in Yoga Karma Packages
Some Yoga studios are willing to work with Yoga students on “karma packages”. In exchange for helping clean the studio, bathroom or yoga gear, the studio will offer a discounted rate for attending yoga classes.
Work at the Gym
Almost all gyms and fitness centers offer free use of the facilities to their employees. If you’re serious about your work-out time, you might consider getting a second or part-time job with a gym so you can use the equipment for free. The side effect is that you’ll have less time to work out if you’re actually working at the gym – but your work out time will be free and you’ll make a few bucks when you’re actually at work, too.
Try Workout Videos and Podcasts
If going to the local gym or yoga studio is outside your budget no matter what, you can purchase a workout video or download workout podcasts from iTunes.com inexpensively and use it to guide your workout. Get a workout buddy to help keep you motivated to stay on your fitness schedule. There are also a TON of excellent workout videos on YouTube.com.
Join a Sports Program
Many community centers and employers offer sports programs from volleyball teams to softball, bowling, or hiking groups. These programs are excellent ways to increase your activity level and get exercise without spending a ton of money. There is normally a one-time membership fee that entitles you to participate all season long. Just a warning, many kickball and softball leagues are more about social drinking than exercising. Which is fine, of course…it’s just not very conducive to getting in shape.
