In good times and bad, we should all make the effort to be responsible consumers for the benefit of the environment as well as our wallet. The current economy has definitely pushed most of us to be more aware of where our money is going. We all use electricity. It is a necessity in our lives and as a necessity we have accepted the cost. Are you actually aware of what your electricity prices are? Do you pay state tax on your electricity? Does your state offer discount programs for not using power during certain times of the day? These are questions you need to know the answers to.

Electricity prices by state vary. It is interesting that the states with deregulation actually have more expensive electricity rates than the states where the consumer does not have a choice for their electricity provider. Connecticut has the most expensive electricity rates with a deregulated market and Hawaii has the most expensive electricity rates in a regulated market. It is a must that you are educated whether your state has a deregulated market and what resources your states is using for power. Idaho, for example, is number 2 on the list of cheapest electricity rates and gets 79% of its electricity from hydropower. Idaho is definitely making it work.

I want to use renewable resources that are better for the environment just like everyone else, but it also has to be wallet friendly for my family. Idaho is showing that it can be done. Obviously we all have the choice to move where we could get the cheapest electricity, however that is not a realistic option for most of us. By being more aware of the electricity costs and the resources being used, we can work with our state to improve our rates and environmental footprint.
