I agree with all the above! Thanks for your voice in the world of (what I see as) mad and mostly senseless speculation and trading...

Ok, I agree mostly with all the above. I differ only in the extent to which other asset classes (beyond the 3 mentioned) are useful and constructive in a portfolio. More useful than just icing. Maybe like icing and the mocha that you have with it.. :)

This is slightly off topic, but the only additions I'd add to the position above for general investing are to ignore market noise and maximise the time invested (invest as early as possible.)

Hi Kyle great article. In addition to traditional index mutual funds, people should be looking at exchange-traded funds also known as ETFs. They are just like mutual funds but they trade like stocks, giving investors the flexibility to hedge with options, exit with stop orders or buy and hold for the long-run. I like to listen to the Index Investing Show http://www.IndexShow.com which has a weekly financial podcast that talks about indexing, index funds and portfolio construction/management. I think people like John Bogle and your blog are what can help people to make informed investing decisions that benefit them, not Wall Street. Keep up the great educational work.

FV, I would own both of them: 12.5% to VBMFX and 12.5% VIPSX. Both nominal and inflation-protected bonds offer their own diversification benefits.

I have the following funds in my Roth IRA: VBMFX (25%), VTSMX, VGSIX and VFWIX. Of late I've been thinking whether to get the VIPSX fund instead of the total bond fund but I can't really decide whether this would be a good move. What are your thoughts about the pros and cons of this?
