Having bad credit does not mean that a student can’t get a loan to go to school. There are in fact many programs that help students get financing that are not focused on credit. Stafford loans are loans specifically for school that are guaranteed by the federal government, so that even in the event that they student defaults, the government still pays the interest. Stafford loans are either subsidized or unsubsidized. With a subsidized Stafford loan, the federal government pays the interest during the time the borrower is in school and for six months after graduation.

With an unsubsidized Stafford loan, the government does not pay the interest but students don’t need to make payments until after graduation and can also take advantage of a 180 day window designed to allow recent graduates some breathing room while they seek employment. Students may be eligible for both subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford student loans with no cosigner, and no credit, as credit is not a factor at all in determining eligibility for Stafford loans, and other forms of federal aid

Other student loans are readily available for people with bad credit or no credit. Many students seek additional loans even if receiving subsidized or unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and other loans like Perkins loans that are associated with a federal or state program. Lenders recognize that students don’t always have the best credit because they don’t have much income. However, they also recognize that most students will be earning a substantially higher income after they graduate. Because of this, lenders are often willing to take a stake in a student’s future prospects and offer them a loan at a reasonable rate. Many reputable lenders offer great programs for student loans for people with poor credit or even no credit at all, because a borrower’s credit score is not the deciding factor for this kind of debt most of the time.
