How To Have Fun Without Breaking The Bank
Entertainment doesn’t have to cost a lot in order to be fun! It can be easy to get caught up in the idea that you have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a good time or a night on the town – but here is a list of entertainment options that won’t cost you much at all. Go ahead – have fun with these inexpensive options and bank the savings:
- Host a movie night. Going to the movies is a popular choice for a date night or night out with friends, but instead of going to the theater, rent a new release or borrow one from the library and have your friends over. You can pop your own popcorn and enjoy a movie with friends in your living room. The best part is, in addition to saving money no one will be “shushing” you if you want to talk about what’s going on in the movie! If you crave new releases, the most basic Netflix membership is just a few dollars per month and many grocery stores have Blockbuster machines with $1 overnight rentals, which I’ve taken quite a liking to lately.
- Visit the local museum. Most museums charge a very small admission fee and some have free admission days. Take advantage of a local museum and experience some educational entertainment.
- Go to the park. When is the last time you went to one of the local parks? Spending a day at the park offers numerous opportunities for entertainment. Bring along friends and sporting equipment for some active fun; a blanket and a book for a relaxing afternoon, or just sit on a bench and people watch. If you visit your park frequently, consider going to neighboring town parks for a change of scenery.
- Spend time volunteering. There is likely a number of charitable organizations in your neighborhood which would welcome your assistance. Not only does volunteering give you the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, but you will feel good about helping someone in need.
- Have a game night. Inviting friends over for a night of game playing can be a lot of fun. From board games to card games to video games – there are endless opportunities for having a good time and spending quality time with your friends.
- Have a backyard camping trip. Sleeping under the stars is just as much fun in your own backyard as it is in a public campground. Better yet, pack up and set up camp in a friends’ backyard or woods. Don’t forget the marshmallows and fire!
Entertainment doesn’t have to cost a ton of money. With a little imagination and keeping your eyes open for free community events, you can enjoy an active social calendar without spending all of your money on the good times.

Great post. People spend way too much for entertainment these days. The backyard camping trip is a great idea. In fact, if you get a permit and you have the room you can build a fire pit and do marshmallows etc. I would suggest for those interested in sports to attend a college game or amateur sports. For a family to go to a professional baseball game these days costs a small fortune by the time you pay for parking etc.
