Do You Really Need Home Accounting Software?
Life is becoming more and more complicated. If you have a family then you are will know just how much time you have to give to getting your kids out to school, then getting food inside them in the evening before shoving them out to their evening activity. Since you have spent all day at work it doesn’t give you all that much space in your day to look after the home accounts.
And if you don’t look after your accounts they will run away with you. It will be like a train that gathers speed and before you know it you will be heading towards disaster, whistle blowing, and no one there in the brake van.
So the main reason for having home accounting software is to be able to save you time and, as a consequence, save you money.
Of course, it will take you a little while to set up the forms and data. But don’t be discouraged! As you are doing that particular task and learning how the software works it is best to try to keep an overview of why you are doing it (to save time and money) and to know that you will only have to do it once. Bookkeeping for the home should, after all, be a quick business.
So what are the benefits once the software is set up?
It will help you to solve some of the problem tax issues. Most accounting software for the home comes with a query function. That means that at year end you will be able to produce a report for the tax man should he demand it.
What about for the future? We have been in a financial squeeze for quite some time now and for many people it has been a wake-up call to action. No longer can you trust your pension fund. No longer can you put all your eggs in one basket, as it were. You need to be looking after the interests of you and your family, and to learn the art of forecasting your investments. That sounds like a pretty big deal but the right software will help you to achieve that goal, and pretty speedily as well, just by working through the instructions and wizards that come with the software package. It won’t actually tell you which investment to make, but it will give you a much more informed choice.
Many people these days approach accountants to sort out their finances for them. This is a great idea because there are a lot of different ways in which home owners as well as businesses can glean back money. However, all that work takes some time, and the quicker the accountant can look at and process the information then the cheaper it becomes. Again, software steps in. If you keep up to date with your entries you can simply take along (or email) your print off to the accountant and they will be able to work through your information step by step. Keep those receipts handy too.
In summary, home accounting software will:
- Save you time, and therefore money
- Help you forecast financial changes and benefits
- Help you calculate tax etc..
- Save your accountant time, and therefore reduce the bill they pass onto you.
Perhaps instead of titling this post “do you really need home accounting software” we should have asked “can your really do without it?”
ED: I use Quicken Home & Business 2010 for both personal and business account needs and highly recommend it.

I tried using MS Money, but didn’t like it (years ago), so I then used Quicken religiously for years, tracking everything in every account (but didn’t bother tracking cash). Even after they got most of my accounts working with transaction downloads, I was still notoriously slow at updating it all (confirming stuff, etc).
Then I bought a Mac, and heard the horror stories about Quicken for Mac. I looked at some other Mac options, but none seemed to enticing. That’s when I switched to just using Mint.com – it’s free, it’s automatic, and I love it. Sure, it’s no where near as powerful as Quicken (the full program), but it does what I needed most – it tracks spending, categorizes most things automatically, and will give me budget information to gauge our spending. Does it do tax reports? Not that I know of. But after 5 or so years of doing my own taxes, I know what stuff is important and needs to be kept for filing taxes.
For me, the most important thing has been the time saved trying to track and coordinate every little thing in Quicken – I just no longer have to do that. It has been well worth it to me.

my2fish, Mint.com offers great functionality, but I don’t recommend them for personal reasons. They seem to have “trouble” paying their debts.
