Finding affordable health insurance is a challenge for most consumers.  The cost of health care in the United States is expensive making it imperative to have the best insurance coverage you can afford.  When it comes to selecting health insurance many people are faced with the difficult decision of how much coverage, if any coverage they can reasonably pay for each month.  There are ways to reduce your health insurance costs, however you must do so with caution or risk losing valuable protection.  Here we look at ways to avoid costly health insurance mistakes.

Not Having Insurance

Obviously the biggest mistake is not having health insurance at all.  No matter how much it costs to pay health insurance premiums the cost of going uninsured is always going to be much higher.  When the time comes and it will, that you need either routine or emergency medical care the expenses can quickly become more than any person can handle.  With that in mind, there are many families that have no option as the money is just not available despite the need.  If this is the case you must not allow pride to get in the way of seeking assistance.  There are government programs available to people who qualify that provide health coverage for adults and children.

Comparing Price Versus Coverage

When selecting a health insurance policy it is common to look first at how much it will cost to pay monthly premiums without considering out-of-pocket expenses.  The danger in this is buying a health insurance policy with a low premium that has high co-payments and limited benefits.  If you have to pay more out-of-pocket each time you visit your doctor or fill a prescription you might end up paying more than if you had selected a policy with a higher premium and better benefits.

Confusion Over Policy Terms

Simply having health insurance does not mean you are covered for any and all expenses.  If your insurance requires you see a doctor within a network and you receive care from a doctor not included, your expenses will not be covered.  Insurance policies can be complicated and many people don’t take the time to learn exactly what coverage is available.  This can result in decisions that can be quite costly.

Health insurance is a necessary evil that we must all deal with or risk incurring exorbitant health care bills.  A major illness or medical emergency can destroy your personal finances and put you in a position where getting out of debt is all but impossible.  Avoid this by taking health insurance seriously and making smart decisions when purchasing a policy.

Excellent point! Especially the one about low monthly payment vs coverage

Nice article. I strongly agree with you about your third point; many people with health insurance don’t do a thorough job of reading their policy’s terms and conditions, which can cause a lot of conflict when the time comes that they need to use it. Reading the fine print before signing a policy will help avoid any confusion about coverage that can happen in the future.
