There are many different types of credit cards. Considering the complications of the recent economic situation, it is extremely important that you choose the right credit card. For example, you may decide that you prefer a card that offers cash incentives or a card with low interest. These days more people even seem to be turning to prepaid credit cards to help them control their spending. In any case, knowing the types of credit cards and what they offer will help you decide what is best for your needs.

Standard cards allow you to use your credit up to a certain limit. Your credit becomes available again after you have made payments. You are required to pay a minimum balance each month to avoid late payment charges in addition to the finance charges applied to the outstanding balance. Standard cards are different from charge cards in that charge cards have no limit but must be paid in full at the end of the month.

Premium cards offer special incentives and benefits such as reward points. Cash rewards credit cards are one type of premium card that allows you to earn cash back from certain types of purchases. Travel rewards credit cards help you build travel mileage credit with purchases. However, these types of cards usually require you to meet a minimum income as well as a minimum credit score. Both standard and premium cards have various types of cards such student, travel and no or low interest credit cards.

Prepaid credit cards are on the rise since you must actually load money onto the card before you use it.  You can never go over the limit of a prepaid card because you can only use as much credit as you have put onto the card. There are no finance charges or payments at the end of the month. Furthermore, prepaid cards are not linked to your bank account.

There are many other types of credit cards for specific use such as store credit cards or gas cards that can only be used at a specific location or for a specific purpose. Business credit cards help business owners separate business transactions from personal ones. When you are choosing your credit card, you need to keep in mind what type of incentives you may need or if you will only be using it for exact reasons to get the best card for your needs.
