Joint savings accounts aren’t something most people think much about. After all, aren’t they just regular savings accounts with two owners?  Well yes, but there are a few important benefits of holding a joint savings account together with your spouse,  instead of separately.

One of the most important benefits of a joint savings account is the access to the funds are not limited in the event one of the account holders dies. It is best to find out the laws in your state to determine if funds will be frozen or placed in probate. Many people choose joint accounts to avoid such a situation. Joint accounts are particularly popular among those that are life partners. In the event of a situation where one of the account holders is ill or dies, the other partner does not have to worry about losing any of the funds in the account or not having access to the funds.

A wonderful benefit of a joint account is it can be designated for a specific purpose such as a vacation. The account holders can commit to a specific amount that each will contribute until the desired goal is achieved. In the event of a financial crisis, either of the account holders will have access to the funds. In addition, the account holders will also have access to transfer funds to another account such as a checking account.

Many savings accounts offer higher yields on higher dollar amounts placed in the accounts. A joint savings account will allow account holders to enjoy these higher yields by combining their funds. In addition, the account grows more quickly with both account holders contributing to the account. This often provides motivation to continue with the savings plan.

While there are several benefits of a joint savings account, however, there are disadvantages. The main disadvantage is that either account holder can withdraw funds without the knowledge of the other. Establishing a joint account should not be taken lightly and should only be established with someone you trust and have a strong relationship.
