The most affordable credit repair is the kind you do yourself. Many credit repair companies abound online and offline that offer exorbitant promises for improving your credit picture. It can be hard to distinguish the legitimate operators from the shysters. The truth is that none of them possesses any secrets or magical formulas that you cannot employ to perform free credit repair for yourself.

The basis upon which all credit repair operates is simple. Credit reporting agencies are private businesses that profit from distributing financial information about you to other businesses. Called “subscribers”, companies such as mortgage lenders, finance companies, and credit card issuers pay a fee to access the database of a credit bureau’s stored information. These firms also submit information to credit bureaus.
All such information is compiled into a single file known as your credit report. When you apply for credit, the prospective lender uses the information contained within your specific credit report to make its decision.

Credit bureaus contain sensitive information that plays a vital role in millions of commercial transactions daily. The contents of your credit file have potentially major impact on your life. For these reasons, credit bureaus are heavily regulated. The main law, which governs credit bureau operations and practices, is a Federal statute known as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The FCRA provides many consumer protections against credit bureau abuses, and establishes permissible criteria for dissemination of consumers’ credit information.

The FCRA provides specific procedures whereby you may dispute negative information contained in your credit file. If the reporting creditor does not verify disputed information within thirty days of your dispute, the credit bureau must remove it by law! Derogatory data may also be reported for only seven years; although some bankruptcies may be reported for up to ten years. If your credit report contains derogatory data older than this, it must be removed.

No credit repair company can accomplish anything that you cannot do for yourself. By law, you are entitled one free credit report per year. You may obtain it online at annualcreditreport.com. From there, you can learn what credit bureaus are saying about you every time you apply for credit. If you disagree with anything in your credit file, you may dispute it through electronic transmission of your complaint via the site. Even if derogatory data is accurate, creditors may not verify it within the thirty-day deadline required by law. Clean up your financial act now, and start getting the credit you deserve!
