A lot of people are concerned about their credit rating. This is quite understandable. Your credit rating is used for an awful lot of things. It can affect your chances of getting a home or mortgage, your odds of getting a new car or apartment, sometimes it may even influence whether you get a job or not. As such, people are often wondering what exactly their credit rating is.

Now there are a lot of scams out there purporting to give you free access to your credit report, but beware. There is only one website officially sanctioned by the U.S. Government and run jointly by the three main credit reporting bureaus that is authorized by law to give out free credit reports: www.annualcreditreport.com. You are entitled to one report every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. Unfortunately, access to your actual credit score is not part of this deal; however, myFico.com does off a Free FICO® Credit Score Estimator. However, if you’re really serious about wanting to know your actual score or plan to take out a large loan (car loan, mortgage, etc) in the near future, I suggest you spring for the full score from myFico.com.

A lot of con artists are looking are looking to cash in your insecurity. They may offer totally free credit reports with a website like www.freecreditreport.com; however, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. While there is nothing wrong with the credit monitoring service offered by sites such as freecreditreport.com, their advertising campaign could definitely be considered to be misleading. You can get your credit report for free, tis true, but you have to sign up for a trial of their credit monitoring service to do so. And if you forget to cancel (which is what they are hoping)? You’ll be paying for a service you neither want nor need.

Odds are if you are really worried about credit score, it probably is not very good. Therefore, here are some simple ways to start improving it. Start paying your bills on time. This is something very basic that people look at. It shows that you can manage your money and show responsibility. If you are having trouble doing this, make a budget for yourself and make sure you put all your bills first. Be prepared to eliminate some luxury expenses if you are serious about having a good credit score.

As counter-intuitive as it sounds, taking out loans and using credit cards is actually a good way to build credit. It seems like only people who are hard up for money should have to take out loans, but your credit score does not work like that. Paying off loans and other debts you owe gives you histories of being able to pay back money you owe, so that are likely to pay back debts owed in the future. Start small if you have no record. Take out a small loan from the bank or get a credit card and make purchases that you pay off every month. This will slowly build your credit, to where eventually you can hopefully buy a house and establish stronger credit.
